A 21st century upper bunk bed that addresses the age old problem within the leisure vehicle industry namely, how do persons move safely between the leisure vehicle and the sleeping surface of an upper bunk bed.Design Alternatives 1, 2 and 3 have been developed for use in all types of leisure vehicle, such as a recreational vehicle (RV) or a motorhome, and a 5th wheel trailer or a caravan. Design Alternative 1 is an access ladder with step landing platform that provides the facility to move smoothly and easily between the standing position and the reclined position. Design Alternative 1 has polyurethane inserts to reduce or eliminate any tendency of the access ladder to wobble in use.Design Alternatives 2 and 3 are an improvement over Design Alternative 1. In addition to facilitating access between the standing and the reclined positions, there is also the provision of a hand holding facility, so the person moving between the leisure vehicle and the upper surface of the bunk bed may steady themselves en route.Additionally, Design Alternatives 2 and 3 alleviate the necessity to clamber over another person whilst negotiating the manoeuvre of bunk bed access and egress. Each person moves smoothly between the bunk bed and leisure vehicle without disturbing another person sleeping in an adjacent position.To comply with regulations, Design Alternatives 2 and 3 may be provided with either folding or fixed bed-head and bed-side barrier means.An additional benefit of Design Alternatives 2 and 3 permits the front of the leisure vehicle to be shaped more aerodynamically, thereby saving on fuel costs.AutoChaise won the Department of Trade & Industry (DTI) Award for Innovation & Excellence.
